Tom Noie made a very revealing comment in his last ND Hoops Chat about Brey's frustration at the lack of leadership on last season's team after Martin went down with his injury. Elsewhere in the chat, there is a comment that Brey was very blunt in his assessment that Jerian Grant will not be the team leader he had hoped. Will a leader emerge? Who will it be. Eventually, I think it will be Jackson, but he likely will be too young for the role next year. Atkins? Connaughton? Knight?
" I think he's beyond frustrated. Again, I've covered him for 13 years, through a whole lot of good and a whole lot of trying times of bad losses, tough losses, and I've never seen him the way he was after the Iowa State game.
That game - and that lack of effort - cut him deep. That's why I termed that loss as an "epic failure." Everything we were led to believe that would be different and good and positive about this program turned out to be so false.
The older guys - Eric Atkins, Jack Cooley, Jerian Grant - liked to joke about how much they were glad Ben Hansbrough was no longer around to ride them every single second of the season.
Looking back, maybe they needed that more than they realized."
