MLS is going on 2 week hiatus for the Gold Cup. I noticed something interesting as I sorted the standings by Points Per Game and looked at how many playing appearances the coach had at top flight clubs. The guys with zero spent their entire playing careers in the United States or Canada. Caleb Porter has essentially no playing career at all. I rounded some of the numbers for guys who played for a lot of different club.

Team PPG Coach Playing Career League
CHI 2.00 Paunovic 350 ESP/GER
TOR 2.00 Vanney 65 FRA
NYC 1.74 Vieira 450 ENG/ITA
DAL 1.72 Pareja 380 COL
SKC 1.63 Vermes 56 NED/ESP2
ATL 1.58 Martino 500 ARG
HOU 1.47 Cabrera 450 COL
ORL 1.45 Kreis 0 NA
NYR 1.44 Marsch 0 NA
VAN 1.41 Robinson 300 ENG
CLB 1.40 Berhalter 200 GER
SJE 1.37 Leitch 0 NA
POR 1.35 Porter 0 NA
PHI 1.29 Curtin 0 NA
SEA 1.29 Schemtzer 0 NA
MON 1.24 Biello 0 NA
LAG 1.22 Onalfo 0 NA
COL 1.06 Mastroeni 0 NA
NER 1.05 Heaps 0 NA
RSL 1.00 Petke 0 NA
DCU 0.95 Olsen 18 ENG
MIN 0.95 Heath 550 ENG/ESP

Interesting but maybe unsurprising. That said, Caleb Porter

has an MLS Cup to his credit, though he's clearly the exception to the "rule".
