WBB needs to make money where they can until they can do it anywhere.
True most MBB teams aren't profitable, but I bet the MBB BET was or at least paid for the cost of hosting it in NYC. I'm not sure about the WBB BET, but because they kept it in Hartford, the BE had to be at least breaking even on it.
TV contracts is where the $$$ are and if your team can't draw a significant audience, it looks bad on TV even if your team is the dominate one in the conference. That's why most of UCONN's WBB games are not televised by ESPN or CBS. Currently, SNY carries most of UCONN's WBB games. CPTV, Hartford's PBS station, used to do it until the beginning of the 2012-2013 season.
UCONN WBB will do fine as long as Geno remains the head coach. They'll have problems when he retires. When he starts having problems recruiting top talent, that will be a sign that his health could be failing, just like with Summit. I suspect Jen Rizzoti would be the first choice to replace him. She's done a great job at Hartford with the limited budget she gets from there. And she played under Geno, so she could maintain the same style of play. Her problem would be "can she handle the pressure of replacing Geno and keeping UCONN dominant in WBB?"
