Things happen. Even if you don’t learn what to do, knowing what things absolutely do not work is extremely useful. Freeman watched Kelly leave the wrong way. He likely also watched how he carried himself and interacted with players - likely also not in the best ways. He had to have noticed the lack of former players around the team too.

Whether he consciously is aware of it, he’s learned a lot of things to avoid doing going forward from Kelly.

It’s possible ND PR told him not to mention Kelly by name, but there would have been other ways to “suggest” Kelly. He purposely didn’t even allude to Kelly.

That and Kelly isn't a guy who would mentor anyone.

Kelly doesn't find you where you're at and help direct you to follow your own path from there; Kelly tells you where he's at and what you need to do to stay on his path.
