but I was always aware of the fact that Notre Dame's willingness to play Michigan State legitimized their sports programs and helped their membership application to the Big 10.

I remember going to MSU in the 90s to watch a one-point win over Sparty. It wasn't nearly as hostile as you'd expect, largely because of that shared history. That history is also why everyone on this board will be unabashed Sparty fans this weekend, as the Spartans host those bastards from Ann Arbor.

(p.s. Although I have to mention that no matter my affinity for Sparty vis a vis UM, that Sparty's fight song just might be the worst song in the history of fight songs, or even the history of music. Holy shit, it is awful.)
