somewhat dependent on the number of teams competing. In 1960, there were 12 NFL teams so the likelihood of a championship in a random draw was ~8%. By the end of the decade, there were 26 teams and today there are 32. Thus it's harder to win a championship in any given year.

Quantitative measures can both clarify and obscure what is happening.
