I'd think the concern is heightened risk of reinjury.

Bill Walton, for example, always regretted agreeing to get injections in his chronically ailing feet. He felt they masked the pain so he continued to play until they got irretrievably worse.

Now that said, I have no idea what Golson's situation was or even what part of his body was involved. The most obvious area of concern in this regard would be his throwing shoulder.
