Was LSU sending someone wide from the backside?

That would be one reason to do that if the QB was sprinting to the other side. I didn't see this during the game, so I have no idea, but if LSU was doing delayed blitzes from the backside -- or had a history on tape of doing that -- then the tackle dropping back rapidly several steps would be the counter measure for that. It would prevent a speed rush behind him and he could still protect the inside if he had to (easier to go forward or a step to the right than to drop two steps suddenly).
