We watched that one together on TV right after our grandfather's funeral. My cousin had gone down to the Bayou for his senior class trip but came back up after grandpa died.
ND entered that game 3-4 and looked like it was headed for a 4-7 finish, with LSU, PSU and USC ahead. LSU was undefeated and ranked 6th, and favored by 10 points (today the spread was 7.5). The game was in Baton Rouge. Fortunately for ND, it was a day game, and LSU at the time was below .500 in day games at home. ND stormed to a 30-14 lead and hung on for a 30-22 upset.
That game didn't prove Faust was a good coach any more than today proved Kelly is an elite coach. But I enjoyed them both. Yes, even us "meanies" prefer victory to defeat.
