It's harder than ever for any institution of higher learning to suggest its sole motive is to promote the mental development of its "student-athletes," when all they provide is a scholarship (diluted at most schools by pressure to take a Mickey Mouse major) attached to a full-time job that results in long-term brain damage.

The Ed O'Bannon lawsuit and the player unionization groundswell are both baby steps in the right direction. Ultimately, I don't see how the NCAA or its member schools, including ND, can ultimately avoid paying the players. And I'm all for it.
