What's wrong with the following public statement?

"Neither Brian nor I are satisfied with our performance in 3 or 4 of the last 5 years. That said, both of us have full confidence in the program that he has built and anticipate meeting our expectations in the very near future."

In private, Swarbrick then tells Kelly that he considers everything but 2012 to be an abject failure and that another 8 or 9 win season will result in his termination.

That is exactly how I conduct performance reviews with my own staff and how I characterize my staff's performance to my superiors.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

But I'm not sure what the point or value of making such a public statement really is.

By the way, do you issue a press release on your staff's performance to let everybody who is interested to know how your staff is doing?

The Observer asked him for an interview

He had four options:

1) Decline.
2) Accept and then lie about his feelings about Kelly
3) Accept and tell the truth, while not revealing the whole truth
4) Accept and tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth

I favor #1, then #3, then #4. #2 is not an option for me. So no, I don't have press conferences to discuss my staff's performance. However, my superiors do ask me about it and when they do, I tell the truth but I do not badmouth my staff to my superiors. I might say that their performance is not where it should be but that I have confidence that it will improve. So in this case, Swarbrick is either lying or, God help me, telling the whole truth. He shouldn't have done either.

The performance of Kelly and his staff are on public display

for 12 weeks so it's already out there to be judged by anyone who is interested . That puts Swarbrick in a position where he's covering up for a naked emperor when he makes such statements.
