Devine wasn't Lombardi, he wasn't Parseghian, and he sure as hell wasn't the big meanie who wouldn't let poor Rudy join in any reindeer games. He spent the last 10 years of his career being measured against Lombardi and Parseghian, and, for obvious reasons, he was found wanting on both occasions. To cap it all off, most people under 50 only know a celluloid version of him that's based, in large part, on a scene that was a total fabrication.

He had enough quirks for 2 men, and he made his share of mistakes, but he ranks 3d out of 10 post-Leahy ND HC's, and he deserved a better legacy.
