Only 2 of the 9 games were against teams with losing records. ND lost at 3-7 Stanford, but upset 7-3 USC. Navy and Pitt both were in the running for the Cotton Bowl that year. The JFK assassination played a role in Pitt being denied the bid; it postponed the Pitt-PSU game to December 7, and the Cotton Bowl didn't want to wait that long so they went with Navy (who lost to No. 1 Texas).

If I recall correctly, ND lost 4th quarter leads in 4 of the 7 losses -- Wisconsin, Purdue, MSU and Syracuse. The USC game was won in the 4th, I believe. But ND wasn't far away from a 6-3 season -- maybe 7-3 if the Iowa game hadn't been cancelled due to the JFK assassination (Iowa finished 3-3-2). It makes it easier to see how Ara was able to win 9 games with many of the same players.

9/28 vs. Wisconsin (5-4) L 9 14
10/5 @ Purdue (5-4) L 6 7
10/12 vs. Southern California (7-3) W 17 14
10/19 vs. UCLA (2-8) W 27 12
10/26 @ Stanford (3-7) L 14 24
11/2 vs. Navy (9-2) L 14 35
11/9 vs. Pittsburgh (9-1) L 7 27
11/16 @ Michigan State (6-2-1) L 7 12
11/28 vs. Syracuse (8-2) L 7 14 @ Bronx, NY
