with the author's account of calling it "mind boggling".
Can you find other examples where a team scored 23 points in the final 7:37 to win a major bowl by 1 point? (BYU-SMU 1980? They were down 20 with 4:07 minutes to go. I can't find the box score..)
In addition to the above accuracy the author correctly wrote:
"Notre Dame utilized a miracle rally"
"What happened in the last 7:37 was mind-boggling."
"The once dumbfounded Notre Dame legions suddenly had reason to cheer."
"He did, and the miracle was history."
In any event, ESPN some time ago ranked the greatest bowl games ever. This game was # 3 on the list.
That game was the final ND chapter of one of our most storied and legendary players of all time. It was pure magic.
No matter how you "superficially" dice up Joe Montana's performance it was an incredible feat that will stand the test of time....
Much of ND's incredible history is being lost today. Your discounting that day's effort here is unfortunate. I'm guessing that most if not all people that saw the game live or were at school at the time would disagree with your account.
PS Please watch the ND southern cal '77 "Green Machine" game. You'll see us botch an extra point placehold where the holder (former QB) threw for 2, you'll see us hit the goal post missing an extra point, you'll see us fumble to a defender at about the 5 for a quick 6 by southern cal,....you'll see us make other turnovers... There were other errors made in that game by us. After reading all that would your opinion be that this game wasn't as legendary because of the number of mistakes?
