after initiating the football scholarship limits, the NCAA was forced to subsequently modify the rule because of Bear Bryant

The Bear was getting around the football scholarship limitations by placing football players on tennis,wrestling,track,basketball and whatever other athletic scholarship he could get his hands on.

The 'Bear Bryant rule' (as it was called) simply stated(in its initial form) that you could not play football until you had played a season in whatever sport you received your scholarship in....changed later to force a school to use a football scholarship if a player played 2 sports(and football was one of them)
