Although Fr. Ted could say that he was following his predecessors in chasing affluence. Men like Fr. Cavanaugh and Fr. O'Hara were willing to chase money---because in those days there wasn't any. Hesburgh certainly ratcheted this sort of thing up a notch, but his partisans could say he was just doing well what his predecessors began.
