Not the % of runs that happen per game or % of yards rushing per game. It is being able to run when you want to or need to. ND has not had that since Holtz.
To be able to run when you want to or need to you need:
1) Reasonable OL
2) Reasonable RB
3) A QB that can also pass -- so that's a threat each play
4) Ideally a QB that can run also, so it is the QB or the RB that may run
5) You need variety for rushing plays -- misdirection and power, inside and outside the tackles
6) You have to practice it a lot. You can't just call the plays and expect them to work. You have to practice it enough that everyone can execute consistently well.
We are lacking #6 and #5. Golson lacks the ability to execute read option, so in reality he can't really run -- he is mobile and can scramble, but that is not the same as a running QB. #6 might fix #4. Using a different QB could also fix #4 without affecting the otehr 5 variables.
