DL recruiting for ND in the 2012 class

Pet peeve of mine is how Kelly and the ND coaches under-recruit on the DL.

2012 is a classic example:

ND signed three good ones: Day,Jones, and Okwara. Pretty good hit rate on all three--though injuries have kept Jones from fulfilling potential.

All three guys were committed to ND by August of 2011. But ND basically shut down DL recruiting at that point(remember Tommy Schutt after Day took his spot).

DE Deforest Buckner played at Manti Teo's old HS. He had interest in ND but they basically stopped recruiting him once they hit their 'target' number the Summer of 2011. Buckner committed to Oregon in Jan of 2012. He is now a lock to be a top 10 NFL pick--probably even top 5. ND had an "in" and didn't take advantage.

When Defense(and DL) has been ND's bane for years-- I don't think Kelly and his staff have done enough to leave no stone unturned.

If there is one position group on the roster where you 'over' recruit--it is at DL.... not WR.

Can never recruit enough DL. *

The season that year our D barely was scored on

It may have been poor oversight in maintaining a strong D, but you can't say it was the name of our existence when it got us to 12-0 months after what you are talking about

That year was an outlier on defense under Kelly.

Defense has been the Achilles heel.

Not true

From 2010 the "D" got better each year building up to 2012. The '11 unit was solid as well. Under kelly the defense has really struggled the last two years, especially under BVG.

How has the D been since 20012?

That was the exception, not the rule.

And even then--the 2012 D was shredded by Alabama when it really counted.

Defense has been ND's bane for many years. Even going back to the Holtz years....think BC in '93 when the D shit the bed and cost ND a Title.
