team that misses out on a conference championship game or a Big 12 (like you said) opponent? You don't schedule a specific team, but book a neutral site and invite TCU or Michigan State when the second-to-last regular season poll is unveiled. Two teams vying to make a statement.

They're not going to schedule 11 games just on the chance that they don't make their conference championship and they can play us.

It will only work by playing a marquee Big 12 team who doesn't have a championship that week. And it may be difficult letting the conference schedule that game because they want to have marquee matchups against each other that week. However, adding ND does guarantee one more good matchup for their teams.
