There was only one other decent team that year. Also, we beat the 6, 11, and 18th ranked teams that year by a total of 31. Two of those (Michigan and Oklahoma) were major programs.
FSU beat the 10, 18, and 20 by a total of 19. Clemson is a borderline tier 1/tier 2 program.
(I am using the AP poll before bowl games for rankings).
Our favorable call against Pittsburgh wasn't nearly as awful as the one FSU got against us. There were a lot more miracle plays in FSUs season - missed field goals and goal line fumbles by opponents that won them the game.
The other factor is that not all point margins are created equal. Excluding overtimes, the average score in the ND games you list was 17.5-13.8. Florida State's seven games averaged 28-24.5. Defense was our strong point and that leads to close games. Florida State is an offensive-driven team. They should be blowing teams out.
