And three of the teams were barely outside the top 50 -- Nos. 51 (MSU), 52 (Purdue) and 53 (Ga. Tech) -- plus No. 66 (Navy). The other loss, of course, was the worst in ND history, in 2008 to No. 97 Syracuse.

Kelly is the only ND coach to have 3 losses in one year outside the top 75.

By the way, looking at other ND coaches, even Gerry Faust had only 2 losses to teams outside the Howell Top 50 -- Purdue in 1981 and MSU in 1983. Dan Devine had only 1 (Georgia Tech, 1976). So did Ara Parseghian (Purdue, 1974).

Also, Davie had 2 such losses -- to Pitt in 1999 and MSU in 2000.

Good catch on Davie.

I should have known he sucked more than that.

I was surprised to see MSU 2000 on that list *
