No, Donna Shalala, you have not suffered enough

Looks like the NCAA might lower the boom on Miami. That's fine with me. Shalala is a fine example of the dark side of college athletics.

Miami is daring the NCAA to do something.

They will file a lawsuit the next day.

I bet Miami will receive very little in the form of punishment. The NCAA (and Shapiro's lawyer) screwed this one up badly, and Miami will skate.

Don't know that I'd characterize it as "skating."

Miami already self-imposed a three-game postseason ban, reduced scholarships, restricted recruiting activities, withheld players from competition, made players pay restitution, etc.

But to your larger point, yeah, it would be surprising if the COI imposed anything beyond mild additional sanctions.

You mean calling the NCAA a bunch of

low down scum sucking pigs and tubs of guts is what you consider a taunt? Shapiro's lawyer was mad that the NCAA didn't pay her enough and didn't hammer Miami hard enough with what she gave them.

Miami is going to adopt the Michigan-Fab Five defense by lawyering up, fighting the NCAA in court, wire-working some sort of jury nullification ala ND in an employment lawsuit in West Lafayette, Indiana, and generally being combative. Get the trial moved to inner-city Miami. No remorse dripping from the Sugar Lips of Swivel-Hips Shalala. They've dropped the gloves and are ready to duke it out.

Most self-respecting universities would have the dignity to be embarrassed, show some cooperation, make at least some pretense of correcting the transgressions, do the time and move on. The Michigans and Miamis of the college world don't even attempt to go through the motions because the general public knows they're institutionally corrupt, and acting contrite is a waste of energy and resources. So why try to disguise their real core values.

Death be not proud....

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou are not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou'art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy'or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

About what you'd expect from the Clinton gang *

Shalala:The fabricated story played well —the facts did not.

The allegations are all lies but we punished ourselves and we've suffered enough any way. Quintessentially Clintonesque: demonize the accusers, jury nullification, don't believe your lying eyes, we're going over the heads of the regulators and taking our case to the people etc. I fully expect that we will hear some sort of veiled threat against the NCAA from the White House at some point. It's the Chicago way, you know.

Here we go

The NCAA is out to get us
The evidence is tainted
They have no proof
Everybody does it
It isn't fair to the current players
How were we supposed to know what Nevin Shapiro was all about?
Shapiro is a convicted liar. Ergo, he's lying about us cheating.

Looks like Miami is ready to employ USC's "I know you are, but what am I?" strategy. Sheer brilliance. Oy vey, college football is such a pop culture Carnival Cruise gone bad.

I just hope that this won't adversely impact the burgeoning musical career of Seantrel Henderson's father. So close. So damn close.

Shh. Don't cloud her judgment with the facts. *

Miami should hire their own investigator.

Get a high profile coach or athlete to do it. Like Jimmah, Stabby Ray, or nose-candy Michael. Then they can accuse the media of running an oh-so-unfair witch hunt.

After that, they can have some half-assed fundraiser, keep faking the funk, and act like they're the real victims in all this.

Once they do that, the punishment will be nothing, really.

Perhaps Franco Harris? *
