Of course he has no intention of helping the rest of the conference out, but this is far more than simple taunting.
He's drawing attention to the awfulness of most every other Big Ten school, getting local media in Madison, State College, Lincoln, etc. to bite and run stories about it for the next week. Negative recruiting by proxy.
Makes Bielema look like a smart man. Which is perhaps more impressive even than an undefeated season.
to the extent they do pick it up, it is easier to sell the Midwest to a kid. Right now, it is only UM, ND and tOSU that recruit well in the Midwest. If others are making that pitch to kids, he can more easily sell tOSU to them. Otherwise, he has to sell both Midwest and tOSU.
They will be a contender with Urban probably every year for next 5 years until he's bored and moves on again. Could sort of fill the role Miami played back in the day.
Apart from the fact that OSU is not interested in making their schedule stronger, why would we want to do it? I wonder about people that want to add Texas, OSU, Bama, etc. to our schedule. We do't gain anything and our schedule is strong enough. We go 12-0,11-1 and maybe 10-2 with our current schedule and we get into the BCS tournament every year. I wouldn't even schedule UM after 2014.
May be saying, this is highly unlikely. OSU will only play one competitive team outside the Big Ten annually; so while they may upgrade from Ohio U...and Miami U...and Troy...they won't play with the big boys more than once. Expect them to schedule one or two games a step up in name (i.e., say Kansas instead of Alabama-Birmingham), but not more than that. This allows them to play at least 7 home games every year and 8 every other year.
In the end, they will be in the BCS hunt even with this relatively easy schedule with 11 wins.
That said, there are only two other teams (Nebraska and Wisconsin) that are perennial top-15 type programs.
They are at their peak and pulled a recruiting class in the 50s, after losing a tough coach.
Perhaps Nebraska can establish itself as the #3 team in the conference, but otherwise the Big10 is same as it ever was.
because of their schedules going forward.
I would also like to play them - especially early in the season before they do their 2-3 warm up games against the MAC schools.
he pisses off Pelini. It would be fun to see Bo rip Urban's head and spine from his body.
