I think back to the story about why the Mary Richards character on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was a single woman who broke off an engagement, rather than a divorced woman. CBS executives were seriously concerned that much of the audience would resent her, because they'd believe that she'd divorced Dick Van Dyke.

Things don't seem to have changed much.
