when a model citizen who was simply the victim of a catfishing scam is as disliked as a liar who engaged in systematic doping and witness intimidation for over a decade and is more disliked than a serial philanderer, a violent thug who instigated the most infamous brawl in NBA history, an egotistical repeat PED offender, a convicted felon who ran a dog fighting ring, an accused rapist, and all-around douchebag Jay Cutler.
Manti Te'o: Threat or Menace? Crusading publishers demand answers!
...The person who suddenly shows up on TMZ and Inside Edition is instantly hated even though most Americans could not give you a cohesive answer why they hate him.
You'd have thought it would have squeaked in somewhere around 99, at least.
Talk about a hundred and nothin'!
It's simple really:
He is Notre Dame's highest profile player in years.
He had received a ton of press for showing outstanding character.
Notre Dame is the most polarizing force in college sports.
The millions of people who don't cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame bring more than just their opposing athletic fandom to our grinding wheel. They bring all their political, philosophical religious and moral axes with them.
It was almost inevitable that at the peak of Manti's (Notre Dame's) positive coverage, that if someone didn't find a chink in Te'o (Notre Dame's) armor, they'd create one and get at us by knocking him down in the public eye. They have a position on Notre Dame and the only thing they'd hate more than being proven wrong is to see Notre Dame proven right in the public consciousness.
When we communicate to the world through words or actions that we intend to do better than the crowd, the crowd will accuse us of arrogance and hypocrisy. Then they will do whatever it takes to drag us down so they never have to ask themselves or explain why they don't try to do better themselves. This whole circus has very little to do with Te'o. He's the straw man. Notre Dame, what it stands for and the positive coverage it receives for attempting to do better is what they're after.
but none have brought ND down yet.
OT...The feared KKK even had a shot at ND and left town minus several sheets.
to be a genuinely nice person, and I believe that his public relations will improve over time.
Why would everyone hate him (aside from the fact that he played for ND)? They're sick of the story. They're sick of hearing about him. The media wanted their pound of flesh (for revenge) because they weren't smart enough to fact check way back when, and they got it by flooding us with stupid stories and unfounded rumors/accusations. Now that the story has died down, opinion will change. He'll have an NFL city in his corner soon enough, whether they like it or not.
Oh, and Deadspin has the Beers (hockey) story up. You knew that was coming. I wonder if they're 80% sure he was drunk at the time?
I think back to the story about why the Mary Richards character on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was a single woman who broke off an engagement, rather than a divorced woman. CBS executives were seriously concerned that much of the audience would resent her, because they'd believe that she'd divorced Dick Van Dyke.
Things don't seem to have changed much.
the collective IQ of this country going forward is a much bigger problem than any trillion dollar plus budget deficit..
It exists equally on both.
Cue Wayne & Garth: "NOT!"
This is depressing for the notion of "appeal."
As for me: I will always love Te'o.
It is not "most disliked", it is "least appeal." They took made a list of athletes that had name recognition among 10% of those polled. Then they had them vote based on appeal. Te'o came in 2nd to last.
This isn't suprising if you consider that most people who responded to the poll probably only know Te'o from the RT hoax. They probably don't actively dislike him, but it's hard to associate any kind of appeal to him if you didn't know him before January 7th.
I've had inside knowledge on two of Forbes pieces in the past. The inaccuracies and general misstatement of basic elements of each situation were alarming to say the least.
Which probably also helps to explain why a doofus like Jay Cutler is up there so high.
and vice versa. It makes no sense but that's what it has come to in America.
None of which is good.
