In the Y2K ESPN commercial, there is a dude with his face painted and a tie wrapped around his head yelling "follow me! Follow me to freedom!" one of us says he is channeling William Wallace/Braveheart. One of us says no, he's not doing Braveheart. What say you, Backroom? (I will find a link to the commercial).

Had you told everyone ahead of time who was betting

Is this what I have to look forward to when I get married?

pass.

I will say that you faked a fair catch on the twenty when AKA punted it through the end zone. What a catch he was to marry. Tis not often the woman gets the officer and the gentleman.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm also very humble,

and that is probably a good thing or I would elaborate and tell you all in detail exactly how great I truly am. You are all very lucky to have me as a part of your internet family, and jd is that much better off to be party to my greatness on a daily basis.

not every dinner conversation will be exciting

especially when the "all ears" 7 year old is with you!

And yeah... he actually is a catch. But don't tell him that.

Wikipedia can be edited, and therefore is fallible.

besides using the word "freedom".

There's a better case to be made that he is channeling De Niro from The Deer Hunter with the head band and the crazy look in his eye.

Face paint. *

I realize Charley Steiner is not an actor, but if that was Braveheart, he would have yelled it. With a decided growl in his voice.

Wikipedia says yes to Braveheart.

Not that they're the authority. It looks more like Lord of the Flies to me.

I remember exactly what you're talking about, because that is probably my favorite ESPN commercial of all time. I've never thought it was a Braveheart reference, just more of the idea of a tribal/less-civilized culture resulting from a breakdown of modern, civilized society. Then again, it's been a long time since I've seen Braveheart, and I'm not really a Braveheart fan. But the face paint is not at all in the Braveheart style. And the Scots didn't wear ties around their heads.

Here's the commercial, and I say he's not doing Braveheart

I always thought Charlie Steiner was just evoking a general, almost "Lord of the Flies"-esque chaos and panic vibe.

That is not Braveheart *
