My understanding is that if a one button jacket of any type is worn, (suit, tux, etc.) that the button is just never buttoned, leaving the jacket open at all times. However, I'm looking at tuxes in anticipation of my fiance and I picking out the ones for his groomsmen this weekend, and I'm seeing quite a few one button jackets. In all of the examples in the Men's Wearhouse "Build A Tux," the one button is buttoned. Is this how they are actually worn, or are they just doing this to show the jacket closed so they all look the same?

An excellent resource. The Black Tie Guide. (link)

One button tuxedos should not be buttoned.

Tuxedos with more than one button should button all but the bottom button.

What about 4+ button single-breasted suit jackets? *

Eggshell? Depends on the color of the accompanying woven loafer; call for details.

Don't forget the quadruple Windsor knotted tie.

Those ties must be about 15 feet long.

My guess is that they are comically short

which is why he wears 6-buttoned coats, buttoned all the way up, to cover the nub that only goes halfway down his sternum.

Looks like you are correct.

He'll be wearing his Army mess dress, so his jacket will look somewhat like that. The groomsmen will all be in tuxes though.
