I.e. road, gravel, mountain, hybrid.

Then go on craigslist or facebook marketplacd, and buy a used bike. So much cheaper. And tons of people did the exact opposite of what you are doing. They think they’ll like biking, so they buy an expensive bike, then don’t ride it.

Those bikes are now on facebook marketplace and craigslist.

I got two specialized carbon frame road bikes (roubaix 105 and a tarmac ultegra for the spandex warriors out there), each for 600 bucks, one somewhat used, and one virtually new - despite the fact that both bikes were about 4 years old at the time. A quick tuneup, and both were ready to go.

And because the guy who sold me one of them was my size, he threw in the shoes, bike pump, and cycle computer he had never used.

The marketplace for used bikes has matured since that time, so deals like that are tougher to find, but you can still get a good deal - and a much nicer bike than you could buy new. Those bikes new were 2200 and 3700 respectively, for frame of reference.
